Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that addresses the 3 components of abdominal wall deformity to create a smoother and firmer abdomen. The 3 components of abdominal wall deformity are: (1) loose or wrinkly skin and stretch marks, usually a result of aging, pregnancy, or significant weight loss; (2) fat tissue, commonly accumulated in the lower abdomen; and (3) muscle weakness and/or separation, which can occur as a result of pregnancy. A tummy tuck procedure will remove excess fat and skin, tighten abdominal wall muscles, and eliminate stretch marks between the belly button and pubis area. At the same time, if needed, liposuction can also be performed on the flanks, hips, or thighs to maximize results of the procedure.

During an abdominoplasty, an incision is made from hip to hip along the lower pubic area (easily hidden by a bikini bottom). The loose skin is lifted off of the abdominal wall, exposing the vertical abdominal muscles which are stitched into a new position, tightening the muscles, and thus flattening the stomach and reducing the waistline. Next, excess skin is stretched and removed. The remaining skin is re-draped over the abdominal area and sutured in place. The umbilicus (belly button), which is released from the abdominal skin flap, is finally re-attached proportionally to the new, flatter stomach area.
A tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. The procedure itself takes about 2-4 hours depending on the work involved.

After surgery, dressings will be applied to your incision sites, and you will be wrapped with compression garments. Small, thin tubes will also be temporarily placed to drain any excess blood or fluids that may accumulate. You will experience some swelling, bruising and minor discomfort. Most patients require one to two weeks before returning to work and their normal activities. Although you should be able to appreciate your new slimmer profile in just a couple weeks, it may take up to 6 months to see the optimal results.

A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive approach with a smaller incision, best suited for those who have only a limited amount of loose skin or stretch marks in the lower abdomen, or above the pubic bone. This approach does not typically involve tightening of the abdominal muscles, and can also be combined with liposuction for a more defined result. A mini tummy tuck is performed in the outpatient office facility under local anesthesia and takes approximately 2 hours.
